Names for Jesus Christ found in the Book of Mormon

Over the years I have discovered many previously unpublished names for Jesus Christ in the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon truly is a witness of Him! If you have names to add to my collection, I would love to have them! You can contact me here.

This research project was inspired by Sister Susan Easton’s work published in the July 1978 Ensign magazine. Her research documented 100 names of Jesus found in the Book of Mormon. Her research was just the beginning. I have found so many more to add to her list. Currently there are over 1,000 and the list continues to grow.

There are different ways that I discover names for Jesus. Some of these name hunting methods are listed below.

  • Text Substitution: If a section of text can be replaced by the name Jesus and the passage still makes sense, then that text is a name candidate for Jesus. An example of a name substitution is the name, “The Hopes of Glory”. In Mosiah 16:8-9 it states that the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ. Years later, a Nephite missionary was teaching this gospel to a Lamanite king and stated that “the sting of death should be swallowed up in The Hopes of Glory.”
  • Changing Punctuation: When the Book of Mormon was transcribed, punctuation was often added later. If we alter the punctuation, longer names can pop-out of the text.
“Light” becomes, “Light upon the face of this land”
“Lord God” becomes, “The Lord God who is the Almighty”
“My God” becomes, “My God all the day long” and “My God whom I fear”
  • Literary Analysis: Scriptures were often written as ancient poems and stories. They include metaphors, symbols, chiasmus, Hebraisms, parables, and other literary devices. By analyzing the text, names for Jesus can be found. Nephi wrote a poem that states,

“I glory in plainness; I glory in truth; I glory in my Jesus, for he hath redeemed my soul from hell.” 2 Nephi 33:6

By using name substitution and parallel repeating poetic structures, a name for Jesus is found in each statement.
    • Plainness: Nephi loved to clarify the scriptures to make them plain so that we cannot err. He loved to explain mysteries so that everyone could clearly understand. Jesus is the light in the darkness that uncovers what was hidden from sight. Jesus is the plain road. He is the clear path. He is the straight and narrow. I glory in plainness. I glory in Jesus.
    • Truth: Jesus is the truth. All truth is connected to him. I glory in truth. I glory in Jesus.
    • My Jesus: Jesus isn’t just an abstract concept. He is a person that we can have a personal relationship with. I am his and he is mine. I glory in my Jesus.
    • Living Redeemer: Nephi states that Jesus had already redeemed Nephi’s soul. I don’t have to wait until a future life to receive redemption, forgiveness, and healing. I can be redeemed and healed now. I don’t have to wait. My life can be a little brighter this hour by turning to him. I don’t have to delay my repentance. I can start my transformation and change my ways. I can stop the bleeding and start the healing. As I think upon the greatness and goodness of Jesus, my soul is brightened, my hope is increased, and I receive the light of redemption.

Research and essays about Jesus’ many names in the Book of Mormon can be found here.

The Book of Mormon list of Jesus’ names is best viewed on a computer or a device with a large screen. Names are quoted directly from the text. The few names that aren’t quoted directly from the text are noted as being inferred. Some names are hyperlinked to a blog post about that specific name. A list of blog posts about Jesus’ names is found here. Names are listed in alphabetical order. Most of them are listed without an accompanying grammar article such as “a”, “an” or “the” in front. If these grammar articles were included it would easily double the size of the list and inflate the number of names listed under the letters “A” and “T”. So while the name “Christ” and “THE Christ” both appear in the Book of Mormon, this list only includes “Christ” even though “THE Christ” has a different emphasis and meaning than the title “Christ” by itself. This may lead to some titles that should have an article in front even though this list doesn’t show it. For example, Jesus is [A] “Foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall”.

Book of LifeAlma 5:58
3 Nephi 27:26
Jesus is called “the Word.”  Jesus is also the “life of the world.”  The names of Jesus’ followers are written in the fleshy tables of the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus. Our names are marked on his body and we are bound to him by covenant.  Our names are written on Jesus who is the “Word of Life” and the Book of Life. By faith and covenant, Jesus is also written in our own hearts. See 2 Corinthians 3:3.
Book of MormonJacob 4:1-3All holy scripture is also known as the written word.  Jesus is also known as the Word or the Word of God.  The 10 commandments and the gold plates are symbolic of Jesus as they endure over time and are now kept as treasures in heaven.
Book of the Lamb of God1 Nephi 13:35-42Jesus will come to scattered Israel to gather them.  He will visit and gather them through the Bible.  The Bible is a symbol for Jesus who is known as the Word of God.
Born of a womanAlma 19:13Biblical genealogies are often recorded through the father’s patriarchal line. Even Isaac is referred to as Abraham’s only son when Isaac was really Sarah’s only son. Abraham also had several other sons. As strange as it is to modern ears, men anciently claimed that they bore and birthed children. Perhaps this was because of the patriarchal power they had and the lower status of women who in some sense and in many cases didn’t even own their own bodies in ancient times. However, from a biblical standpoint, no earthly man could state that they bore Jesus. Jesus didn’t have a biological earthly father to state that he bore Jesus. In this sense, Mary is given a unique honor in that Jesus was born of a woman and not a man.
Born of MaryAlma 7:10

Broken Heart and Contrite Spirit3 Nephi 9:20
3 Nephi 12:19
Jesus is our example.  He humbled himself and fulfilled the father’s will.  His heart was literally broken by the spear that pierced his side on the cross and out came blood and water. see John 19:34  As his followers, we are asked to sacrifice our hearts and breath or spirit.  In other words our own desires and words are set aside and replaced with his heart and his breath or spirit.  We sacrifice our own path for a better way.

Captain
(inferred name)
Alma 48:17Captain Moroni is an archetype of Jesus. Jesus is our true captain of liberty and our true example. This scripture is intended to point us to Christ and becoming true Christians by comparing Captain Moroni to Jesus. Captain Moroni was only a great defender of liberty because he followed Jesus who is our true liberator who shakes the powers of hell and devils to save us. We can shake off sin, devils, and hell with Jesus at our side. If we are like Moroni, we will be Christians following Jesus. The scripture might more directly state that when we are true disciples of Jesus, hell has no power to bind our hearts to its misery.

Cherubim and a flaming swordAlma 42:2-3Jesus is the tree of life. Jesus guards the tree of life. He is the gate of heaven. He is a flaming sword that postpones our eternal judgment. He grants us time and the means of repentance to grow and learn until we are ready to resurrected forever and come fully into God’s presence. Jesus is both the judge and the keeper of the resurrection.  The image of an angel and a sword of light guarding a tree calls to mind Moses’ encounter with Jesus at the burning bush.
Chiasmus (inferred name)2 Nephi 25:24-27
Jacob 4

The word chiasmus means cross.  A chiasmus is a type of poem where the beginning is connected with the end either its opposite or its complement.
